The power of one point focus

I mentioned before that one night, completely unannounced, Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim had a big surprise for us in store.  We had just finished the Lunar New Year special dinner, and felt quite full and happy, when Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim asked to meet us all, in uniform, at the Do Jang, a few minutes from right then and there.

Since for Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim there is no such thing as “routine” or “normal”, we knew something really exciting was up, and sure enough, all black belt level students and above were about to experience a testing!

Among the many, many outstanding performances, in the picture above you can see the now SaBum Nim Hope Winter, succeeding in a very difficult technique:  breaking  a free-falling full thickness board.  She started out by holding the board up in her left hand, and striking the falling board with her right.

Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim points out that for this technique, you must have your body and mind as one, in total harmony.  You cannot worry about your school or work or family while doing this, or any Martial Arts technique.  You cannot indulge in any day dreaming about your girl or boyfriend.  You must bring body and mindy together as one!

To illustrate this, here is what Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim has to say:
